How to choose anti-aging skin care for YOUR skin

There are countless anti-aging products on the market – but how do you decide which ones are right for your skin?

See a skin care expert

The easiest way to choose the right anti-aging skin care for your skin is to consult an expert. Developing a relationship with a trusted aesthetician can help you see major improvements in your skin and also prevent future damage.

We asked our skin care experts to weigh in on how they choose the proper treatments and take home skin care for you:

"Research has shown that people in their 20's want to look better in selfies and pictures and want to see instant results. Fines lines will be high on their list of concerns. Since the damage isn't usually as deep with this age group, I focus on making sure they follow the proper daily routine with one anti-aging product in the mix if they need it, along with regular Custom Blend Facials. It's crucial to start a daily routine of cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice daily, but most importantly applying a broad spectrum sunscreen every morning! If they still suffer from fine lines or other aging concerns, I usually recommend adding Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum or Plump Start to give them an extra boost and added preventative care. People in their 40's and up typically want to see improvement on fine lines, deep wrinkles, age spots, loss of firmness, etc. They may also be interested in slowing the aging process. Be strategic when developing a treatment plan with your client. Start with the concern that bothers him/her the most and progress from there with a combination of professional treatments and at-home care. Quick Refiner for Eyes, Plump Start, Skin Editor and LightPlex GigaWatt Dark Spot Corrector are just a few great choices that I tend to gravitate towards for this age group and these concerns. Gentle chemical peels are also a great treatment for treating some deeper damage. Ages 60 and up typically want to see improvement in the overall health of their skin. This group will be looking for your professional recommendations for a complete at-home skin care regimen and treatment schedule. Skin Editor is above and beyond my favorite for this age group!" - Alina Houtz, Licensed Aesthetician, Jordan Thomas Salon & Spa.

How to choose anti-aging product: Make it work with your lifestyle

"There are a plethora of wonderful anti-aging products from Bioelements, but no one expects you to use every single one in your routine – it all depends on your lifestyle and your skin concerns. Are you a skin care junkie? Add several anti-aging products into your daily routine. Don't have the time or patience for a lengthy routine? Opt for an all-in-one anti-ager like Skin Editor or Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum. That being said, anti-aging prevention in the form of a daily broad spectrum sunscreen should start at a very young age, regardless of lifestyle, skin type, etc." –Nina Holt, Esthetician,Westwood Studio and Spa

"The first thing you should evaluate is your skin type and the products you are currently using. Then follow with asking yourself what are the areas on your face that truly concern you. I recommend focusing on your top 1-3 concerns instead of trying every product under the sun. " –Tina Martinez, Licensed Esthetician, Flawless Beauty By Tina
How to choose anti-aging product: Identify your biggest skin goals
"When you start looking for anti-aging products, always ask yourself what your specific skin care goals are first. 'Anti-aging' can be a broad term and may mean something different to you versus someone else. When you look in the mirror what is the first thing you notice? Fine lines under your eyes? Try an eye creme like Sleepwear for Eyes. Dull, lackluster skin? Opt for Radiance Rescue to rev skin up for instant glow. There's no one-size-fits-all solution. However, I do always recommending starting with the appropriate cleanser, toner, and SPF. When the skin is balanced, it is able to get the full benefits from any anti-aging skin care that you use." -Tricia Koch, Licensed Esthetician, Solei Day Spa
The right anti-aging products for you
These are the most common anti-aging skin concerns and the top products to treat them. How many products you incorporate into your routine depends entirely on your lifestyle, severity of your concerns, and your preferences:
Fine Lines & Wrinkles
Both natural aging and everyday actions cause fine lines and deep wrinkles to form. Prevent them by wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen daily and tackle them with these products if they have already formed:
Skin Editor is an imperfection-editing leave on AHA peel creme that works to erase long-term damage to dramatically reduce the look of lines
Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum is an all-in-one serum that uses clinical-strength retinol, peptides, CoQ10 and fermented pumpkin to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
Plump Start delivers intelligent hydration to visually improve the look of skin's wrinkle valleys and crevices and scavenges skin-aging free radicals for long-term improvement
Radiance Rescue wakes up skin's microcirculation so you emerge glowing and less lined
Collagen Rehab helps lines look filled so wrinkle appearance improves and skin looks instantly renewed and dewy
Sleepwear and Oil Control Sleepwear both work overnight to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles as it dramatically improves moisture and tone
Sagging & Loss of Volume
Forget the needles and lasers. Today there are effective skin care solutions to firm and tighten the appearance of sagging skin:
Plump Start uses an intensive plumping concentrate to deliver instant youthful fullness
Collagen Rehab uses amino acids to help support collagen and elastin performance – so lines appear filled, skin looks firmer, and acts years younger.
Age Activist Clinical Youth Serum creates a smoother complexion (both on the face and neck + chest)
Multi-Task Eye Creme eases the lines brought on by sagging and helps skin feel firmer
Sleepwear and Oil Control Sleepwear's dream team formula works overnight to reclaim firmness
Crows Feet & Dark Under Eye Circles
The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on your body – It's the area of the face that most often shows the first signs of aging, and is prone to dark circles and fine lines. Protect delicate skin with these targeted under eye treatments:
Radiance Rescue helps increase skin's elasticity and moisturization to reduce the look of lines and puffiness around the eyes
Sleepwear for Eyes works while you sleep to moisturize and nourish this thin fragile skin to target crows feet, smooth surface lines and improve wrinkle length and depth
Multi-Task Eye Creme is a light and non-greasy daytime eye creme designed to brighten, target puffiness and ease fine lines
Sensitive Eye Smoother is a gentle formula for delicate skin smoothes texture, minimizes puff, brightens circles and helps defend against irritants
 Age Spots
Over time, UV damage can lead to the production of solar lentigines (also known as "age spots" or "liver spots"). Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen will help prevent further dark spots and protect the results you've gotten from treatments, but to truly tackle age spots use the following:
Skin Editor edits skin imperfections and helps brighten dark damage
LightPlex MegaWatt Skin Brightener is an antioxidant skin brightening cream that brightens and evens all over for luminous, hydrated skin
LightPlex GigaWatt Dark Spot Corrector pinpoints and obliterates stubborn, isolated age spots, discoloration, UV damage, and signs of past acne with this lightning-fast formula

Don't Sedate...Stimulate!

The fountain of youth is in your bloodstream. Challenge the skin. Don't sedate...stimulate!

When I first learned to perform professional facials more than two decades ago it was with a "hands-off"approach (sounds unbelievable but it's true.) We were taught to never let the skin redden…keep it calm and soothed. Don't rock the boat! Then I met my mentor who taught me just the opposite. "The fountain of youth is in the bloodstream," "Challenge the skin," "Don't sedate, stimulate."

This stimulation is accomplished by massage of the face, neck and shoulders. Facial massage naturally drains away accumulated toxins, boosts collagen production, and tones the skin. Circulation is also revved-up by the application of highly active professional treatment products. To me, this is the main reason to get monthly facials. The ultra-stimulation of skin simply cannot be duplicated at home. No way.

Now that doesn't mean you'll exit the facial room with beet red, burning skin. On the contrary, a licensed esthetician is taught to rev-up the skin, deep cleanse it and then calm it back down. It's not about the relaxation factor (though that's a wonderful side effect) or miraculous de-aging…it's about "helping the skin help itself." Increased blood flow to the skin carries oxygen in and drives toxins out. This in turn promotes firmer, clearer, younger-looking skin. How can you go wrong?

So, I'm off to get my monthly facial. After all, I want to keep getting those ego-boosting comments about how great my skin looks. But before I go, I've got a quick question for you. Have you made regular facial treatments a part of your skin care program?

One of the first-ever licensed aestheticians in the U.S., Barbara Salomone is the architect of the modern American facial. Since launching Bioelements Professional Skin Care in 1991, she has trailblazed the industry, incorporating nutritional supplements into topical skin care products, and pioneering the introduction of antioxidants, calcium, probiotics and lutein.

The Benefits of Oncology Massage

Oncology massage is an approach to massage therapy based in both compassion and specialized massage treatments to help people manage their experience with cancer.

Review of the scientific literature shows us that oncology massage helps improve the quality of life of those who are currently or have previously gone through cancer treatment. Benefits include improved relaxation, sleep, and immune function as well as relieving anxiety, pain, fatigue and nausea. Oncology massage therapists are trained to meet people where they are in their experience with cancer and apply a highly individualized massage treatment to comfort, nurture and support them in their process.

The treatments are modified according to the full spectrum of cancer-related issues: the physical, psycho-social and emotional consequences of cancer. In addition, the person's individual goals are considered and aspects of the disease and cancer treatment side effects.

Personal goals for receiving oncology massage can include the desire for a respite - a relaxing pleasurable experience in the midst of everything that is going on - relieving nausea or other symptoms such as pain or peripheral neuropathy and helping them get though the remainder of their cancer treatments.

"Getting massages from someone who understands everything that is going on, is part of my healing process"  Tom, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer almost three years ago and receives massage therapy at the Integrative Medicine Center.

In the past, therapists thought massage would increase circulation and therefore cause cancer to spread. The process of metastasis is very complicated and poorly understood; however increased circulation is not considered a significant part of that process.

However, it's true that cancer and cancer treatments can put people at risk for complications from massage, so it is important to take some precautions. Because of the different contraindications for massage in this population, it is very important for the massage therapist who is treating a person with a history of cancer - either currently or in the past - to have specialized training in oncology massage, in addition to being a licensed massage therapist.

How to make life easier: 7 insanely easy skin hacks

Think you don't have the time or patience for a complete, effective skin care routine? Think again, they make the rest of your daily routine easier, too!

#1: Create a double-duty exfoliating cleanser

No time to fit in your regular mask? Get a small dose of your favorite supercharged ingredients by mixing it in with your cleanser!

You can create an effective exfoliating cleanser at home just like professional estheticians use in their treatment rooms. This skin hack delivers deep skin cleansing plus smoothing and brightening exfoliation in one, and speeds up your skin care routine without sacrificing any benefits.

Simply combine your cleanser with an exfoliating scrub or mask (like Measured Micrograins or Kerafole) in your hands and apply using small circular motions. Rinse with warm water.

#2: Mask your mouth

Your favorite face mask can also double as a lip treatment! Massage over your lips for a few seconds and then rinse off.

Collagen Rehab is our favorite mask to use on the lips because it is formulated with an ingenious fusion of collagen-supporting amino acids, softening mango and moisture builders that help rehabilitate aging, lined and exhausted skin – on both your lips and the rest of your face. This is the one Bioelements mask you don't have to rinse off, simply apply and let it soak in.

You can also use Kerafole, Restorative Clay, or Measured Micrograins + to exfoliate any dead skin cells away and reveal smoother lips. Need extra hydration for dry lips? Apply Ultra-Rich CremeTherapy on your lips and let it sit for a minute or two. Then rinse off with warm water.

#3: "Depuff" under your eyes

Struggle with puffiness under your eyes? There's no need to buy pricey marble rollers or other useless tools to reduce puffiness under your eyes. Instead, apply a couple swipes of Radiance Rescue under your eyes! This white truffle, caffeine and murumuru butter creme mask helps increase skin's elasticity and moisturization as it reduces the look of lines and puffiness under the eyes.

Glowing skin hack: apply Radiance Rescue to your whole face, not just your under eyes, and leave it on for 10 minutes (or longer!) to emerge glowing, less lined and with an intensively enviable luminescence.

Bonus tip: place your eye cremes and gels in the refrigerator until you are ready to apply. The cool temperature will help reduce puffiness as potent ingredients deliver real results: less puffy, brighter, smoother skin under the eyes.

#4 Refresh skin fast

Skin feeling dry or drab? Recharge your skin quickly with a spritz of a hydrating toner anytime throughout the day. Modern toner formulas (unlike the drying, alcohol-based version of the past) are an essential step to return your skin back to a comfortable pH and replace essential nutrients that tap water can strip away during cleansing. Always tone after cleansing, and take it with you to mist your skin throughout the day to replenish lost hydration, add extra glow and refresh your complexion.

Plus, your toner can actually double as a finishing spray. Mist it on immediately after applying your makeup to 'set' makeup and give skin a dewy finish.

#5: Hit 'refresh' on your skin

Want to instantly refresh skin? Perform the Kerafole Purge. Simply apply Bioelements tingly 10-minute face mask, Kerafole, for 7 days in a row for a total purge of impurities. This intensive treatment helps stimulate circulation in the skin to move toxins up and out to reveal skin that is fresh and clear.

"I did the 7 day purge and now use this product about 1-2x per week. It is like I hit the reset button on my skin and leaves my face feeling so soft! Amazing." –Jennifer S., Bioelements.com 5 Star Review

#6: Soothe skin

"One of my absolute favorite skin tricks, especially during allergy season, is to keep my eye creams along with Barrier Fix Daily Hydrator in the fridge. The eye creams are so soothing when they're cooled. Plus, this moisturizer formula is already designed to soothe skin fast, but keeping it cool in the fridge helps it instantly reduce puffiness and redness. This is one of the best summer skin hacks too – the coolness feels SO refreshing on your skin when it's hot and muggy outside." –Rita Holland, Licensed Esthetician, Marguerite's Skin Care & Makeup.

Does your skin get irritated post-wax? Apply Stress Solution to your skin after waxing to soothe and prevent irritation and then follow up with the Barrier Fix Daily Hydrator from the fridge.

#7: Crease-proof your under eye concealer

If you've looked high and low for a concealer that doesn't crease, the trick is to properly prep, hydrate and smooth the under eye skin first. Follow these 4 easy steps to get smooth skin and crease-free concealer here – this is one of the best beauty hacks for skin care!

Concealer that doesn't crease: The one trick you need to know

We'll let you in on a little secret: the trick to getting a concealer that doesn't crease is the right skin care!

Looking high and low for a concealer that doesn't crease? We'll let you in on a little secret: the trick to getting a concealer that doesn't crease is to use the right skin care! Read on to learn our under eye skin care secrets.

Prevent

The absolute best way to get a concealer that doesn't crease is to prevent under eye wrinkles and crows feet. According the The Skin Cancer Foundation, 90% of age signs are caused by the sun, so make sure to always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen, even in the winter. Smoking, a poor diet, and improper skin care habits can all contribute to fine lines and wrinkles as well.

Exfoliate

If you're already struggling with fine lines, exfoliation is crucial. A buildup of dead skin cells can get trapped under the skin's surface, which makes your lines and wrinkles appear deeper and your concealer creased. It also blocks the absorption of key skin care ingredients, so make sure to exfoliate away those dead and dulling cells! Since the under eye skin is so delicate, you have to exfoliate gently. Try Quick Refiner for Eyes; it's specifically formulated to gently sweep away dead cells to reveal smoother skin.

Hydrate

One of the most common skin care issues is dehydration. Aging, lined skin is often starved for moisture. It's important to moisturize from head to toe, but your under eye area is particularly prone to dehydration. To get a concealer that doesn't crease, you need to properly hydrate. The surface can become tight and flaky, which will emphasize the appearance of crows feet and lead to creased, uneven concealer. Try Multi-Task Eye Creme to moisturize your under eye area. It's a targeted treatment packed with ingredients to brighten the skin and ease lines. Multi-Task Eye Creme is your concealer's new best friend! If your skin is more sensitive, try Sensitive Eye Smoother. The non-greasy, gentle formula helps hydrate and protect sensitive skin from environmental irritants.

Repair

While you sleep your body works hard to repair your skin from the damage it sustained from environmental aggressors throughout the day. It's imperative to take advantage of this time to repair and restore the delicate skin under your eyes. Use Sleepwear for Eyes to improve the appearance of wrinkle length and depth, target crows feet, smooth surface lines, and firm the skin. After using Sleepwear for Eyes every night, you might not even need concealer!

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Some key facts on the powerful treatment that is changing the way people are approaching their health

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, yet effective technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to promote the removal of body toxins and excess fluid from the tissues by speeding the flow of lymph up to 100x the normal rate. MLD is an important part of treatment for lymphedema and the management of other edemas due to its propensity to move fluid. But MLD has other characteristics that have significant therapeutic advantages other than decongesting the tissue. It has a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system, boosts the immune system, detoxifies the body, speeds post-operative healing while improving the outcome, and has an analgesic effect, just to name a few.

Let's talk about the lymphatic system and what it does for you

Your lymphatic system runs throughout your body and is parallel to your venous system. However, unlike your veins, the lymphatic system is not a closed system and has no central pump (i.e. your heart). It is made up of hundreds of lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and lymphatic capillaries spread throughout the body. The lymph vessels generally parallel your body's arteries and veins. The lymph vessels collect and return excess fluid from all over the body, filter and concentrate it, and then return it back into the blood circulation.

Fights infection: the lymphatic system transports a watery clear fluid full of proteins and lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are infection-fighting cells. Lymph fluid is clearish yellow to milkly white in color, depending on where it is in the lymph system and how concentrated the lymph fluid is.

Lipid (fat) absorption: the lymphatic system also absorbs lipids from the intestine and transports them to the blood.

Drain excess fluid: as the blood circulates through the body’s tissues, it leaves behind waste products such as proteins and fluids. Excess fluid is drained through capillaries and into the lymphatic system where it is filtered and returned to the blood.

Who would benefit from Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can benefit people who are experiencing the following:

-lymphedema

-fibromyalgia

-swelling or edema

-skin disorders

-fatigue

-insomnia

-stress

-digestive problems

-arthritis

-migraine episodes

The authors of a 2015 systematic review concluded that lymphatic massage might be more effective than traditional massage in relieving symptoms of stiffness and depression in people living with fibromyalgia.
People should not have a manual lymphatic drainage if they have congestive heart failure, blood clots, kidney problems, infections, or circulation problems. If a person has any medical conditions, they should talk to a doctor before trying a lymphatic massage.
Who performs Manual Lymphatic Drainage at East Hill Massage and Aesthetics?
Rae Petersen is  Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Lymphedema Therapist, and owner of East Hill Massage and Aesthetics. Rae is not only trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, but also in the full treatment of Lymphedema and other inflammatory diseases and disorders.
